Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has declared the National Resistance Movement (NRM) a criminal group.

In a gazette notice dated 30th January 2018, the CS quoted Section 22 of the Prevention of Organised Crimes Act, 2010 declaring the opposition's group illegal.

NRM was formed by opposition Nasa last year, with an aim of mobilizing their supporters to resist government policies, products, and services of companies they said aided Jubilee in "rigging" the August 8 elections.
