A senior Seventh-Day-Adventist Church pastor from Nyamira conference has termed decision by education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i to demand freedom of worship for Adventist students across the world as ‘remarkable’.
On Monday at a function in Kamagambo, Matiang’i warned school heads against subjecting SDA students to discrimination during their Saturday worship day saying they too deserved a chance to pray.
The announcement has been welcomed by Pastor Henry Nyamwanda who backed it saying it was a provision in the constitution.
“The announcement by the CS is remarkable and was long overdue. The constitution provides freedom of worship but that has not been the case in schools which are not sponsored by SDA church,” he said.
“I want to call upon all school heads across the country to ensure the directive is implemented and our children are given a chance to worship on Saturday before embarking on any tuition. They must be given time to interact with God,” he told the reporter on Tuesday.
He also urged Matiangi to take disciplinary measures against school heads that may be opposed to the directive.
“The CS was clear that Saturdays are not a normal school day but in case any school that isn’t Adventist wants to have private tuition," said Nyamwanda.
"Then those subscribing to the SDA church should be allowed to worship failure to which responsible school heads should be punished accordingly,” he said.
