Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) students have given Education CS Fred Matiang’i a 72-hour ultimatum to end the ongoing lecturers’ strike. The students have threatened to organise countrywide protests if Matiang’i and other stakeholders in the education sector fail to come up with an amicable solution to the dons’ strike. This comes after lecturers downed their tools on November 1 over the government’s failure to implement their Sh10 billion Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). Led by the TUM student union president Daniel Otieno, the students said they will not tolerate the strike any longer."Comrades' patience is at the elastic limit and very soon it will break....we promise," said, Otieno, as quoted by The Star.Otieno also asked the CS to refrain from politics and resolve the strike which has paralysed learning in different universities in the country. The students also asked TUM Vice Chancellor Leila Abubakar to close the institution until the issue is resolved."She should close the university until the strike is over,” said Otieno.Talks between the lecturer’s union and the Inter Public University Council Consultative Forum collapsed last week.
