Education CS Fred Matiang’i has been put on the spot for
advertising vacancies in the boards or councils of publicuniversities despite a court order stopping the process in March, last year.
Dr Matiang’i has advertised the vacancies on the Educationministry’s website in the quest to fill the positions ofchairperson and board members in 21 public universities.
The notice come months after the Employment and Labour RelationsCourt judge Nelson Abuodha suspended the recruitment process pendingthe hearing and determination of a petition before the court.
Activist Okiya Omtatah, who filed the petition, has now filed anapplication asking the judge to find Dr Matiang’i in contempt ofcourt.
He wants the CS jailed for six months and the advertisement by theminister quashed.
Dr Matiang’i dissolved all public university councils in Januarylast year in a bid to have them reconstituted in line with the law, which provides that the CS shall make appointments after an open andfair process.
“The adverts are in utter contempt of the orders this courtissued on March 10, 2016, prohibiting the recruitment of persons tofill vacancies in governing councils of public universities and oftheir constituent colleges pending the hearing and determination ofthe petition.”
