Despite his spirited campaigns in Bogichora Ward, education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i failed to impress following a humiliating defeat on Jubilee party.
For three months, Matiang’i led a well-oiled jubilee team that comprised of Nyamira Women Representative Jerusha Momanyi, North Mugirango MP Joash Nyamoko among others in campaigning for Jubilee candidate Charles Onchiri.
Shockingly, Onchiri managed only 419 votes, coming a distant fifth in a race that was won by ODM’s George Abuga in the Tuesday's mini poll.
“They conducted high intensive campaigns than mine but I trusted my people who handed me this major victory,” said Abuga, adding that the voter turnout was impressive.
Despite President Uhuru Kenyatta leading in Nyamira in the two successive presidential elections, ODM leaders maintain that the outcome was robbed from their leader, Raila Odinga.
“Jubilee does not have stakes in Nyamira and I am sure they lost badly. Our candidate managed 3500 votes, an indication that we are popular,” said Nyamira County Majority Leader Duke Masira.
Matiang’i has been conducting Jubilee activities in the populous Gusii region and the outcome is a big blow to his influence in the regional politics.
