Just two days after a fire had razed down seven dormitories at Itiero Boys High School in Kisii, a similar tragedy has befallen Nyamache Secondary School where a dormitory went in flames on Monday evening.
The 7pm fire broke out just hours after Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i had been the school in a fundraiser that raised about Sh2 million for reconstructions at the facility.
Confirming the incident, Kisii County Commander Ms Agnes Mudamba said that the cause of the fire had not been established although police were working on it.
"A fire is ongoing in the institution, but I cannot speculate on the cause of the fire just yet," she said.
Nyamache OCPD Japheth Mwirichia also confirmed the incident and pointed out that they had managed to fight the fire in collaboration with the public.
"The fire began at around 7pm when the electricity supply resumed after a day-long blackout. We managed to put it out with the help of students, staff and members of the public," he said.
When reached for comment, school principal Mr Phillip Ogechi declined to talk to the media.
Kisii schools have lately been on the spot following fires that destroy school property worth millions of shillings.
On Saturday night, Itiero Boys set ablaze their dormitories because the school had denied them a chance to watch a football match on TV.
The cause of the Nyamache fire has not yet been established as police begin their investigations into the matter.
