Parents have been advised to monitor teachers who engage themselves in their private activities rather than being in school.
According to Cabinet secretary for education Fred Matiang’i, the absenteeism of teachers in schools is as a result of teachers engaging themselves in their own private business.
The Matiang'i has therefore challenged parents to monitor the teachers in their respective school.
“Some teachers concentrate more on their own business rather than being in school, this habit should stop that is why I would like to tell parents to monitor teachers whether they are in school or not, ” said Matiang’i.
He also cautioned some teachers who are Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA) directors by urging them to choose between being in the education sector or in farming.
"Sometimes I fail to understand how can we improve our education when we find teachers at the same time being tea directors," said Matiang'i.
"We need them to choose either being in class or being on the farm” added Matiang’i.
In addition, he told teachers and principals to be sympathetic to parents since they sacrifice a lot to ensure that their children access education.
“Teachers we need to be sympathetic to the parents since they have many challenges of ensuring that their children are in school hence we need to be in schools to over the services to the children” added CS Matiang’i.
The cabinet secretary was speaking at Kisii and Nyamira county when he had a visit to schools.
