Education CS Fred Matiang'i is now going out for school heads disobeying the school fees regulation guidelines.
This will be the second phase of reforms Matiang'i is bringing to the education sector and the heads could be fired alongside their counterparts who performed dismally in last year’s national exams.
The CS has spelt out that from January 4 he will lead a team of education officials in making visits to selected schools countrywide to see to it that these headteachers are adhering to the set guidelines.
“I wish to put boards of management of schools that charge extra fees on notice. Once we confirm any such illegalities, appropriate disciplinary action shall be meted out,” he said.
However, Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association chairman Kahi Indimuli on Monday said that principals have agreed to work within the new fees guidelines but asked the government to provide lunch for learners in day schools.
“We are ready to comply and we have passed the same message to all principals. We do not want to run into trouble with the government,” he said.
Alliance High School Principal David Kariuki added that although they were willing to comply, this would only happen after they table the issue for discussion during the parents' meeting to decide on which clauses to get rid of.
“Every home has its own different needs We will have to comply but it will be after consultations with parents and the school board,” he said.
