Education Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang'i has asked parents to pay only the legitimate fees stipulated by the Education Ministry and not the unauthorised amount that some schools have been charging parents.
Speaking in Nairobi during the National Parents Association forum held at the Centre for Mathematics, Science and Technology in Africa (CEMASTEA), Matiang'i said that schools paying extra fees should first write for authorisation from him.
"Parents in the country should not be paying extra fees. They should only pay fees stipulated by the official guidelines from the relevant sources," said Matiang'i.
This comes after the stipulated fees set for public day-schools was set at Sh9 374 and those at boarding schools at Sh53 553.
The government had dedicated to pay Sh12 860 for all students in public schools in the country.
If applied, this will see parents relieved from the high fees that they have had to deal with considering some schools charge minimums of Sh80 000 per term.
