The Cabinet Secretary for Education, Fred Matiang'i has pledged his support for the special education students in the country. Speaking at the first ever annual conference for the Special School Headteachers Association of Kenya (SSHAK) held at Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), Matiang'i said all students need quality education no matter their disabilities. "I want to promise the headteachers today here that I will do my best in ensuring the special needs students get quality education. We are working with KICD to come up with an all inclusive curriculum that will also benefit special needs students," said Matiang'i. Also present in the meeting were KICD director, Julius Jwan and SSHAK chair, Arthur Injenga who all praised the works being done by the Education Ministry to ensure all special needs students get quality education. The meeting was convened to discuss the problems facing the special needs education in the country. Lack of enough funding for special needs education, lack of enough teachers trained to teach special education, lack of enough reading materials and lack of an all inclusive curriculum were the problems that faced special education in the country. The Education CS promised to work closely with Finance CS, Henry Rotich to ensure funding for the special needs students is increased in the next financial year. The CS also said the annual conference should be held regularly to allow evaluation of special education progress in the country. This will ensure special needs education is improved in the country.
