Education CS Fred Matiang’i has warned universities that are not observing guidelines provided by the ministry.
Speaking on Monday during the 31st AMREF Health Africa Graduation in Nairobi, Matiang’i said he will crack the whip from next year on such rogue institutions.
Among the institutions, he aims to crack the whip on are those operating under Letters of Interim Authority.
“I guarantee you that you will soon be witnessing the revocation of accreditation status and rationalization of the existence of some of these universities,” Dr. Matiang’i noted as quoted by the Star.
“We are going to take a serious look into this issue because you cannot hold an interim letter for 8 years and over and you do not have any substantive explanation as to why you are not able to move to a fully fledged university,” Matiang’i added.
The Cabinet Secretary took issue with private universities that have been struggling due to mismanagement of resources.
“While this unfortunate state of affairs was one to reckon with in the public universities, it is disheartening to observe that the private universities have equally joined the wagon,” Dr. Matiang’i noted.
He further noted that students will be key in awarding marks to their lecturers, in a bid to ensure quality is maintained.
The Ministry of Education has been undergoing major changes under the leadership of Matiang’I, with his abrasive nature streamlining the sector.
