Acting Interior Cabinet secretary Fred Matiang’i has dismissed claims that police are using force in selected areas across the country, adding that he will not be moved by opposition leaders.
Lawyer James Orengo warned that the opposition supporters may be forced to defend themselves from police brutality in reference to the death of three people at Bondo on Friday.
But at Ibacho on Saturday, Matiang’i said police were within confines of the law to deal with ‘criminal’ elements masquerading as demonstrators.
“The stressful thing is that they only look these issues from one side. They never care about rapists, thieves and looter,” he said, adding that police were acting impartially.
He added: “it is wrong to vilify us using fictitious information. Police were responding to a threat at their work base. We should be honest all the time.”
His remarks comes at a time social media users are circulating disturbing videos where police are caught beating innocent people in the lakeside town of Kisumu.
To ensure the rule of law prevails, Orengo said, opposition will not sit back and watch police butchering innocent protestors.
