Education Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiangi has announced plans to introduce day scholars in selected national and provincial secondary schools across the country.
The CS said the move aims at controlling the anticipated high number of Form One admissions once the government rolls free secondary education in public schools next year.
Dr. Matiangi, who officially opened the 42nd Kenya Secondary School Heads Association Conference in Mombasa, noted the move is aimed at ensuring maximum transition of pupils from primary to secondary school come January 2018 in addition to enhancing the teacher-student ratio.
The government has rolled its sleeves in readiness for the implementation of free secondary school education.
A broad band system is also expected to be installed across the schools to manage a proposed National Education Information System to store basic information of the students including resources available to them.
To ease the burden of the parents plans are underway to revise the Instruction Material Framework in conjunction with publishers so that course books are structured.
Meanwhile, students have also lost their privilege to elect their leaders as well as a representative in the Board of Governors. This is after Dr. Matiang’I announced that the number of BOG has been revised downwards from 12 to 9.
The government has also banned the use of school buses in electoral campaigns.
Schools are expected to close on August 4 for two weeks to pave way for the general election that will take place on August 8.
