Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has revealed why security officers were withdrawn from Uhuru Park during NASA leader Raila Odinga's inauguration on Tuesday.Addressing the press at his Harambee House office in Nairobi on Wednesday, Matiang'i said it is the government's responsibility to protect lives and prevent bloodshed."The government's responsibility is to protect lives of the people, we are committed to the rule of law,” Matiang'i said.Matiang'i said there would have been a 'massacre of catastrophic proportions' if police were allowed in Uhuru Park since some of the NASA supporters were armed with crude weapons in readiness to attack the officers if they were denied access into the venue."There was a well-planned effort intended to use the excuse of a possible conflict (between police and NASA supporters) to cause bloodshed," the CS stated.Sources within the ministry disclosed that the event was a top issue on a Monday security meeting that concluded that no security would be provided for an ‘illegal activity. ’

Matiang'i added that TV stations would remain shut down until investigations were concluded.
