A man has sued Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i’s challenging the appointments the CS made last week for the Council of the University of Nairobi.

Thadayo Obanda filed the suit against Matiang’i and the Attorney General seeking to suspend the six appointees whose appointment featured in Gazette Notice 2334 published on March 14.

He claims that the appointments of Victoria Otieno, Timothy Mwangi Kiruhi, Peter Maangi, Meshack Kidenda, Mahat Somane and Jane Wanjiru were unlawful and so the six must be barred from assuming office.

Through his lawyer Jusa Ambani, he accused Matiang’i  of making the appointments in blatant contempt of court orders that were issued earlier on March 3 by High Court judge George Odunga.

Odunga, in the ruling, had barred Matiang'i from meddling with the composition of UoN's governing council.

“Mr Obanda is aggrieved and deems the appointment as illegal, it is only fair that pending the final determination of this case, the court suspends the taking effect of the gazette notice,” lawyer Ambani told court.

In 2016, Obanda successfully managed to have the High Court bar Matiang'i from meddling with UoN's affairs in a separate suit.
