The Education ministry has been challenged to invest in technical education to empower millions of youths who fail to join universities and secondary schools.
Maklweta, an organization that promotes girl-child education in Africa, wants Education Cabinet secretary Fred Matiang’i to undertake reforms in technical education in Kenya.
Maklweta founder Dr Erick Komolo said many students fail to join universities and secondary schools after taking KCSE and KCPE exams because of laxity in reforming technical institutions in the country.
“Technical education is very important for according our youth skills which can help them earn them a living in future,” he said. Speaking at Rabango Secondary School in Rangwe Sub-county where he donated Sh100,000 for the construction of a laboratory, Komolo expressed concern that many young people in Kenya are hopeless as the Government fails to build their confidence in technical education.
He said many technical institutions are unable to offer the required training as they are in bad condition. “Matiang’i has put a good effort in reforming basic education in the country. Let him apply similar efforts in reforming technical institutions,” he said.
He said Kenya will only achieve the millennium development goals if technical education is accorded the required priority in reforms. Komolo challenged county governments to support vocational training institutes to empower the youth.
“Our leaders need to understand that rural Kenya needs technical labor for our country to achieve vision 2030. We need sustainable development in rural Kenya for our
