Education Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiangi on Saturday said the government will stop at nothing in its bid to clear the rot at the local universities.
He said an audit report done by the Commission of University Education, CUE, was only a pointer of the decay facing the institutions of higher learning.
Dr Matiangi said the report will be used by the ministry to delve deep into the bottom of what is ailing the universities with view to having the situation tackled.
“To us the report is like a mirror and we are looking at it with fine toothcomb and I tell you we will stop at nothing to ensure that systems at the universities are up to their proper gear,” he said.
He acknowledged that the report by the CUE contains what he called serious breaches that calls for ‘ honest conversations between the stakeholders ‘ in a bid to end them.
The report yet to be made public details massive management missteps among the public universities among them admission flaws, inadequate staffing, poor examination administration and supervision and research.
The shocking report is said to had been kept secret due to its damning contents which are likely to shake the heart of academia in the country.
Among other things , the CUE report indicts university managements for starting unaccredited study programmes, and even graduating students who barely meet the threshold of the recommended lecture hou
But yesterday Dr Matiangi said the government will not run from the contents of the report.
Instead, said the CS , it will be like a mirror that will help direct the steps they will take to deal with the malaise ailing the institutions of learning.
“We are not running away from it. Instead we will look at it and see the areas that need to be addressed and I tell you we are moving in full tilt to address that,” he said.
He was speaking at Itibo SDA church in Nyamira during a function.
