Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i's continued presence in social-economic activities across Kisii and Nyamira Counties has raised tension among political elites.
Surprisingly, the tough speaking minister has not made his intentions known, thus raising eyebrows from among politicians positioning themselves for various seats ahead of 2022 polls.
Interestingly, his roots in both counties makes the situation even complicated. His parents were born in Kisii County but the minister was raised in Nyamira and still resides in the county.
Multiple sources privy to Matiang'i's activity intimate that the minister is weighing options of running for governor in either of the counties, with a position of Deputy President also in his plans.
"He is yet to settle on the seat he will be going for. He has options to run for Nyamira gubernatorial seat and even in county," said the source, adding that the move has caused confusion among politicians.
Last weekend, several leaders from Nyamira County backed Matiang'i for the deputy president position, even though he remained mum about the proposal.
"Matiang'i is now fit to deputise William Ruto in 2022. We shall push for his position because the community deserves it," said Borabu MP Ben Momanyi.
Political pundit Gideon Mamboleo says Matiang'i's cards are worrying, thus the tension among politicians.
"He is popular among the elderly from both counties and they constitute a bulky population of voters. This must worry those planning to run for gubernatorial seat."
