Farmers in Matungulu, Machakos County have been advised to properly store their farm produces so as to avoid the deadly aflatoxin.
Matungulu public health officer Charles Muthama said slight mistake by farmers in storing their harvests can cause loss of lives.
Muthama spoke at a public baraza in Ngomeni on Wednesday.
He advised the locals to ensure they properly dry their harvests and store them in dry places to avoid aflatoxin.
"Farmers should ensure that they totally dry their harvests then proceed for moist free storage," Muthama said.
Muthama said aflatoxin is poisonous hence can cause death if consumed by human beings.
He told the farmers to confiscate affected grains.
"Consumption of aflatoxin can be deadly since it affects the liver, that is why I'm stressing on proper storage of farm harvests. There are Agrozet bags in agrovets which you can acquire for storage," Muthama added.
Muthama's sentiments were echoed by the area sub chief Timothy Muthama who told residents to avail themselves whenever there are public barazas so as to get sensitized on important issues.
