Over 900 families that were evicted from Mau Forest and settled at Majani Mingi and Nalomolo in Nakuru have expressed fear of contracting cholera.
The families have complained that the government has abandoned them three years since they were relocated from the Mau forest.
Speaking at Majani Mingi and lead by Jackson Kirui, the settlers accused the government over poor conditions they are living in.
“We do not have clean water for domestic use and the only nearest water point is 5 kilometres away and the water is sold dearly at Sh 40 per 20 litre jerican,” said Kirui.
He added that they have no latrines for human waste disposal and the situation has been worsened by the ongoing heavy rains across the country.
“Cholera outbreak has threatened the lives of Nakuru County residents and has since taken a number of lives in the county. We are worried of contracting the disease,” he said.
County health officials in Nakuru have taken long and short term measures to ensure the disease does not spread such as developing isolation centres, creating public awareness, disinfecting toilets, banning of food hawking among others.
In Nairobi, the outbreak has taken eight lives while many other victims have been admitted in isolation wards. Apart from Nakuru and Nairobi, more than six other counties are affected.
