The government has been urged to look into the welfare of former Mau Mau fighters.
Mwangi Kahuma, a spokesman of former freedom fighters, Naishi branch, Njoro sub-county said that the majority of former fighters are wallowing in abject poverty, after liberating Kenya from the hands of colonialists.
“We sealed the independence of this nation with our blood yet we have nothing at our disposal,” said Mwangi.
Speaking at Njoro Trading Center on Wednesday during a Mau Mau heroes meeting, Mwangi said that it is a shame to see the heroes living in poverty, in spite of the crucial role they played to liberate this nation.
“The fruits being enjoyed in this nation were as a result of Mau Mau fighters, yet they are living in poverty,” added Mwangi.
Mwangi urged the government to set up a special fund to help the former fighters to ensure they enjoy their sun set years.
“I appeal to the government to set up a fund that will cater for Mau Mau heroes,” he added.
Mwangi said that in spite of the former fighter dedicating their lives in the struggle for independence, many are living under pity conditions.
“It is shame to see some of us have no shelter in spite of liberating this nation. Some of us have no food to eat yet they are the once who spearheaded the liberation of this nation,” he further noted.
He observed that many heroes who are in their sun set years have been abandoned by their immediate families and life has become unbearable to bear.
The meeting was attended by over 100 former Mau Mau heroes, who called on the government to look into their affairs.
