Mau Mau veterans from Machakos County who fought for Kenya's independence on Tuesday morning presented a petition to the Machakos County government.
Led by the Machakos Mau Mau veterans Association Secretary Ngitu Wa Kaingiri, the veterans said they want the county government to consider them in funds allocation.
“We have been waiting for funds which the government promised to distribute to our members in vain. On consultation with our members in the forum held on Thursday last week, we decided to present a petition to our government,” said Kaingiri.
Kaingiri further lamented that many Mau Mau members are elderly, and despite the great effort they put while fighting for independence, they languish in poverty and sicknesses as they cannot afford treatments.
Confirming the petition presentation, Machakos County assembly speaker Bernard Mung’ata on Tuesday afternoon while speaking to the press outside the County buildings stated that he had received the petition from the association’s representatives.
“I understand the content of the petition presented today by the veterans and as we promised them, we will ensure their needs are going to be catered,” said Mung’ata.
The Mau Mau veterans also called upon Machakos County government to put aside development funds to help the elderly in their projects at community levels.
