Mavoko Sub-County leaders on Friday met to discuss how to prepare for the expected El~Nino rains not to cause great damage to the residents.

The meeting that was attended by various departmental heads from both national and Machakos County governments was chaired by the Athi River Sub-County senior assistant commissioner Philip Lemalasia.

The departmental heads included the new Mavoko Sub-County Administrator, Onesmus Ituo, public health officers from the region, area security chiefs, chiefs and their assistants and medical officers including local leaders and civil society representatives.

The meeting discussed strategies to be put in place by both the governments in mitigating effects which would be caused by the expected heavy rains in the region.

Lemalasia noted that it was high time residents leaving along River Athi and Mto Wa Mawe river be convinced to move to higher grounds.

He said that it would be of more justice to the locals to move to safer zones ahead of the rains so as to avoid loss of lives and property once El~Nino rains poor.

The meeting that was held at Athi River Health Centre also resolved that all the blocked drainage and sewer systems within the sub-county and its environs be unblocked as more tunnels constructed to ease free flow of storm water and avoid flooding.

The meeting came barely a week since the Machakos Governor, Alfred Mutua, announced that his government had allocated Sh300 million for El~Nino mitigation.
