Bondeni Children and Rescue Centre has accused Mavoko Primary School of charging school fees despite free primary education in all public schools.
Addressing journalists on Sunday, Bondeni Children and Rescue Centre director Florence Gitau said the Mavoko Primary school is extorting money from parents and guardians.
"It is wrong for them to be charging school fees and yet the goverment has said that primary school education is free in all public school," said Gitau.
Gitau said it has become expensive for the orphanage to have its children learn in the school due to the institution’s exorbitant charges.
She said the school has introduced an admission fee of Sh3,100 for new children joining class one or lower class.
Gitau said the school’s class teachers send children home for fee at the expense of their studies.
“Lower primary school children are charged a tution fee of Sh10 while those in upper classes are expected to part with Sh20per day,” said Gitau.
Gitau lamented that the charges were just too much to bear claiming their efforts to raise the matter with the school's head has not borne fruits.
“For now we want to transfer our 40 children in the institution and take them in another school which respects government orders,” says Gitau.
Our writers efforts to reach Athi River District education leadership comments on the allegations went futile as his phone went unanswered.
