Pupils from Mavoko Primary School in Athi River District have called on well wishers to help them access sanitary towels and pants so as to continue with their education without unnecessary interference.
Communicating through poetry during a prize giving day in the school on Saturday, the children said most of them suffer a lot whenever they were in their menses due to inaccessibility of the important commodity.
“We are suffering a lot because most of us cannot afford the sanitary towels and clean pants whenever they are in their menses periods," said the pupils in a poem narration.
They alleged that majority of them hail from humble backgrounds where only a meal was taken in a day and therefore the towel and pants were treated as luxurious commodities.
Jane Maina, a teacher in the school said most of the girls stayed at home whenever they were experiencing their menses periods.
According to Maina, the situation affected the victim's education because they were not able to be at par with other pupils whenever they returned to class.
She said several girls who sat the last year's KCPE in the school never performed well as compared to the boys due to the problem.
She called on the well wishers' intervention to avert the situation arguing that if the problem was not immediately fixed, girls’ performance in the school and generally Athi River District in entirety would continue deteriorating as time goes by.
