Residents from Mavoko sub-county have been encouraged to embrace agribusiness to improve their living standards.
Addressing a congregation at a Church in Athi River town on Sunday, Mavoko MP Patrick Makau said there were lots of opportunities for the locals to get into the venture.
Makau said it was illogical for the residents to keep on depending on farm produce from other parts of Kenya especially Central, Rift Valley and Nyanza regions while they were capable of producing their own.
"Our people are capable of feeding themselves adequately and exporting excess farm produce to other parts of the country," said Makau.
He said there were large tracks of land in parts of the sub-county like in Kasuitu, Kinanie and Katani areas which could be well utilized to conduct extensive crop production.
Makau said despite the fact that the land belongs to private individuals and corporate organizations, they could be leased by groups or the locals as a community to do the farming.
He said the land is fertile and can support farming of a range of crops including maize, sorghum, vegetables, crops, fruits, trees among others.
Makau said the residents should make good use of the flash floods that had left behind adequate water in ponds around the sub-county for irrigation to support their farming.
