Tens of residents of Mavoko sub county who were displaced by flash floods due to heavy rains have started returning to their homes.
Majority of the slums had homes located at low areas along Rivers Athi and Mto Wa Mawe before the heavy rains the region experienced for close to two months.
The most affected locals were residents of City Carton, Kanaani, Sofia, Jam City, Kwa Mang’eli, JuaKali and Bondeni Slums all in Athi River town.
A spot check on the rivers Wednesday showed that water levels had gone down, and their bridges, which were submerged by water due to the rainfall were now usable.
Some of the residents and their families were also seen moving from where they had temporarily sort refuge back to their homes.
Anne Ndunge, single mother and resident of Kicheko Slum said she had to move from her sister’s house in Athi Town to her house to enable her children go to school.
Ndunge said the children had not reported to school since they re-opened because the sister’s house where she sought refuge was far away from her children’s school.
She said she also had to return to her house so as to continue with her kiosk business where she stays.
Majority of residents in areas that were seriously affected by the floods had moved to safer grounds following an order from the Athi River deputy county commissioner Albert Kimathi.
