Mavoko Constituency in Machakos County is set to benefit from the national government’s plan to construct one million low rental housing units to shelve housing shortage.
According to a report published on November 15, 2017 by www.constructionkenya.com, the State Department of Housing and Urban Development is seeking to build 8,000 houses on a 55-acre parcel of land that has been set aside by the government in Mavoko, Machakos County.
The report further states that the project, which its tender closed on October 30, will utilize low cost building technology and will serve as a prototype for the one million homes project. A total of Sh1 trillion will be spent on the construction of one million low cost homes in major towns by 2022.
Mavoko residents will benefit more from this prototype project. Apart from getting low cost housing units for the residents, most of them will also be absorbed in the construction jobs. Construction of both commercial and residential housing units usually come with many benefits to the locals.
From professionals (engineers and architects) to manual laborers including mama “githeri” who will make a lot of cash selling food to the “mjengo” workers until when the project will be completed.
