This call was made by Mavoko assistant county commissioner David Tegutwa who said that it will help minimize unnecessary deaths resulting from houses collapsing as the case of Huruma flats in Nairobi county a week ago.

“Kenyans should learn to take precautions earlier instead of waiting for disasters to strike before they act, we should not make leaning from experience a habit,” said Tegutwa.

Tegutwa who spoke to this writer at his office in Athi River town on Thursday said there were several houses in a number of slums within the sub-county that were not inhabitable though people live in them.

He said some of them stand on swampy and riparian areas along River Athi while others were poorly constructed either with substandard building materials or unqualified contractors.

The officer said those living in such residences should move with immediate effect before they were forced out by relevant authorities.

Tegutwa, on the other hand, appealed to local investors in housing industry to be committed to giving their clients quality houses so as to minimize risks of houses collapsing especially during harsh weather.
