Residents of Mavoko Sub County have been urged to stop discriminating people living with disabilities, and instead support them cope and prosper in the society.
The call was made by Joseph Kibe, Sub County’s disabled representative, who lamented that rates of discrimination among physically challenged in the region is alarming.
“I call on the Mavoko people to stop discriminating people living with disabilities because it is not their choice to be so, all should give necessary support to the group,” said Kibe.
Kibe said there was around 105 people living with disabilities in Athi River Township ward alone, asserting that the entire sub county had many of such persons.
He called on the government to consider the group by offering free training on reading and writing using brail, to enable them continue with their education alongside effectively running their daily errands.
The representative argued that the training would also enable the dumb and blind fit in the digital error, which the Jubilee government is advocating for, so as not to be left behind.
Kibe, who made the remarks at a youth forum in Athi River town on Saturday called on parents and caretakers of the disabled to stop hiding their children or relatives living with disabilities, and instead expose them for available support.
