Teachers of a primary school in Athi River have been accused of extorting parents by collecting unjustified tuition fees.
Addressing reporters in Athi River town on Sunday, area MCA Michael Mutua accused the teachers of Mavoko primary school of corruption since they were reportedly collecting the money from parents.
"These teachers are corrupt, it is not right to collect any money which has neither been justified nor approved by the national government through its Education ministry," said Mutua.
Mutua argued that the teachers should not collect the money which they call tuition and activities since the government funds the schools from the national kitty.
He said tuition in schools had been banned by the government and therefore collecting money ifor that purpose by the teachers was criminal.
The politician cautioned the teachers from collecting the monies alongside activity fees stating that those caught doing so would be arrested and prosecuted in a court of law.
Mutua was reacting to complaints from most of parents with children learning in the school who alleged that teachers collected Sh10 from each pupil daily as tuition and another of the same amount as activity fee.
He called on the national government's intervention, warning that if the teachers do not stop collecting the monies, he would mobilise parents and residents from the region to eject the school's headteacher from his office.
The school's leadership has been in a spotlight for a while now with complaints from some of the parents whose children had been sent home for failure to raise the said funds.
