Many young people in Mavoko have missed out on job opportunities due to lack of national Identification (ID) cards, a youth leader has said.
Erick Ndunda says that the situation had made it difficult for most of the unemployed youth in Mavoko to get jobs in companies within their neighbourhood.
Ndunda who spoke to Hivisasa in Athi River town on Wednesday said it was the responsibility of youth who had attained 18 years of age to seek the crucial document from the registrar of persons.
He says several youth of legal age in the sub-county have not yet applied for ID cards consequently locking them out of opportunities around them.
"It is unfortunate that in spite my efforts as youth leader in Mavoko, the numbers of those who have attained 18 years but have no IDs is still high," said Ndunda.
He noted that a significant number of youth in the area thought national ID cards were only important for registering them as voters to allow them participate in elections.
"Such ignorance should be condemned in society. They cannot even own an Mpesa or a bank account," he said.
Ndunda encouraged them to register for ID cards to enable them benefit from available government initiatives including the youth fund.
