There is dire need to intensify campaign on abstinence among youths from Mavoko sub-county to reduce their chances of contracting sexually transmitted infections (STI's).
This statement was made by Standard Youth Group's organizing secretary Patrick Muteti who said abstinence was the only sure way of preventing diseases such as Gonorrhea, Syphilis and HIV/AIDS.
Muteti said the youth were the most vulnerable groups to the infections especially those out of school because of their social life styles and environments under which they live.
"I urge all youths from Mavoko sub-county to join us, members of Standard Youth Group in mobilizing other youth with the intent of sensitizing them on the importance of abstinence," said Muteti.
Muteti addressed a youth meeting at KMC slum in Athi River town on Friday.
He said majority of the youth who had either sat for their KCPE or KCSE examinations were idling in several parts of the sub-county with nothing constructive to do.
Muteti said such youths should join youth groups so as to benefit from various youth-tailored projects by various different players across the region and beyond.
He said there were a lot of benefits for the youths who make right and bold decisions to keep away from peer pressures thereby abstaining from premature sex.
According to Muteti, idleness and poverty were the major reasons why several youths from the region engaged in unnecessary premature sex.
He said as a youth group, they were engaging youth in comprehensive guidance and counseling to avert the situation in a bid of ensuring healthy and responsible youths.
