Residents of Mawawa area in Nyamira North sub-county have asked police from the region to improve the status of security following increasing cases of crime.
Speaking on Wednesday during the burial of a resident who was attacked by unknown people on her war from the nearby Ikonge market, they accused police of laxity and called for immediate beefing up of security in the region.
According to them, running businesses in the area past 7pm has been a problem since at least four residents have been brutally killed under controversial circumstances.
“Police have the responsibility of ensuring we live with peace and harmony. The rate of insecurity is alarming and nothing yet has been done. We are aware that we have buried at least four people since March who have died under mysterious circumstances,” said Mrs Peninah Moraa.
They further asked the government to expedite the process of investigations to ensure the perpetrators are brought to book besides calling for transfer of officers from the nearby Matongo police station due to alleged incompetence.
“We want to see perpetrators being brought to book. This is the only way we will settle. Further, we want only competent officers to be deployed in the region. We have the powers to demand so because the ultimate function of the government is to provide security to her people,” added Mr Ben Onchong’a.
But according to Sergeant Jonathan Otieno of Matongo, police officers have managed to arrest three people in connection with rising insecurity in the region and have been taken to Kisii prison awaiting trial.
