After the video of an inebriated Mawingu sub-location Assistant Chief Joseph Rotich went viral on social media this week sparking public outrage on the looming futility of the war on illicit brews, it seems like this is just but the tip of an iceberg.

Rotich who was sacked on Wednesday  and is expected to appear in court to answer to the charges, represented a large clique of civil servants who go to work completely intoxicated and hardly deliver the services as required.

This leaves no one as an exception since most civil servants including teachers, police officers, and even top government workers love taking their favourite drink before reporting to work to ‘facilitate’ service delivery.

Following President Uhuru Kenyatta’s directive on the crackdown on illicit brewing dens and arresting of the brewers last year, matters seem to have changed after the half-time break and the hunter has become the hunted to play parity in the game.

Even as Rotich plays the role of the sacrificial lamb after charges are opened against him, the government needs to underscore the need to crackdown all civil servants who believe in the ‘power of the bottle’ to enable better service delivery and end up giving shoddy services to the public and resultant failure in most government offices.

Looting of taxpayers’ money cuts across embezzlement of public funds, drunkenness in places of work, hanging a coat on the seat and going for ‘breaks’ for hours to turning government offices into private business premises by individuals.

Kudos to the amateur videographer who captured the assistant chief, and may the same extend to most government offices and expose them.
