“In Nairobi, at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, hardy five minutes passes without a plane landing or departing. That is how we envision Kisumu International Airport,” he said.

He said the government is exploring a number of ways of increasing activities at the airport that can increase the revenue base.

The PS announced that they will be looking at the entire integrated transport master plan and see how the constituent airports play into the bigger master plan.

“Kisumu Airport must start cargo business and I want to appeal to the locals to venture in horticulture farming to be able to produce agricultural products that can be exported to other countries,” he said.

Speaking in Kisumu when he toured the ongoing expansion works at the airport on Monday, Nyakera said the expansion of the airport is near complete, and the expansion will cost Sh600 million, which entails increasing the runway from 45 metres to 60 metres.

Nyakera said the airport will take bigger planes after the completion of the expansion.
