Runyenjes Member of Parliament (MP) Cecily Mbarire has lauded and welcomed the move by former Devolution Cabinet Secretary (CS) Anne Waiguru to join active politics.

According to the Member of Parliament, Waiguru’s move to venture into active politics will encourage women across the country to take up politics ahead of the 2017 elections.

She says that politics is not a reserve for men and that women too have a right to vie for elective seats.

“We welcome Waiguru and other women who want to vie for top seats in the coming elections,” she said on Tuesday during a meeting with women in Embu.

The MP said that the constitution provides for equal rights for both men and women on matters leadership.

“Women should not be scared away in their bid to vie for top seats in the coming 2017 general elections,” she added.

Mbarire who has served fifteen years as Runyenjes MP has declared interest to unseat Embu governor Martin Wambora in 2017.

The MP says that she has the experience to become the next Embu governor.

So far four women have declared interest in governor seats across the country.

Deputy National Assembly Speaker Joyce Laboso has declared interest for Bomet seat.

Kisumu deputy governor Ruth Odinga has also declared interest to unseat governor Jack Ranguma.

Last week, Waiguru shelved her ambition for Nairobi gubernatorial seat and said that she will contest for the Kirinyaga seat.

With the next year’s polls fast approaching more women are expected to declare interest in vying for top seats.
