Nakuru Women Rep Mary Mbugua said it is important for children to be protected against any harm as their rights have been infringed by people of bad will in the recent past.

“Today as we celebrate the day of an African child let us make it part of our effort to elevate child protection. Childhood should be carefree playing in the sun not a nightmare in the darkness of the soul,” she said.

She also called on parents as well as the community to ensure that children attain education, are in good health and equality among them.

“Every child has a right to health, education, equality and it’s this protection we ought to elevate. Remember that child cannot wait for someone someday; you are someone and today is someday. Happy day for every African child,” she added.

The international day for the African Child’s theme this year was Conflict and Crisis in Africa: Protecting all children’s rights.

It is marked on June 16 every year.

The day is marked against the backdrop of increased cases of child abuse especially sexual harassment on both young boys and girls in the country.
