Nakuru Women Representative Mary Mbugua has challenged more women to vie for elective positions in the 2017 General Elections.
Speaking in Naivasha town on Wednesday during a women leadership forum, Mbugua said that women have a better chance of being elected into leadership positions, but most of them do not come out to seek for those positions.
She said that women have proved to be better leaders than men, and urged them to go for higher leadership positions.
Mbugua added that it was saddening to see that all the eleven constituencies in Nakuru County are represented by men.
“Women must come out and contest for leadership positions because we have a better chance of being elected but if we don’t come out we cannot get the positions. In 2017we must fight hard to ensure that we grab some of the seat being held by men,” said Mbugua.
Mbugua said that women are faced with numerous problems, which can only be solved by people who understand them better.
She called on women to support fellow women who come up to contest for leadership positions, and reminded them that electing a woman will be the easiest way of improving their lives.
“Women are the pillar of the family and society and we are the people who face most of the problems in the society but these problems can be solved if we decide that we are going to elect our fellow women during elections,” she added.
She said that she will work with and support women who will show serious interest in contesting for leadership positions in 2017.
The forum, which was sponsored by UNDP was aimed at educating women on the importance of fighting for leadership positions rather than waiting to be nominated.
