Nakuru Governor Kinuthia Mbugua has expressed his concern over the standards of some of the flower farms in Naivasha following the closure of Karuturi Flower farm.
The governor noted that the management style of some of the farms was wanting, adding that this had led to the suffering of the workers.
The closure of Karuturi Flower Farm in Naivasha resulted in loss of jobs for over 2,600 workers last month.
The closure is said to have been occasioned by financial mismanagement.
The governor was speaking on Tuesday in Rubiri primary school in Naivasha after commissioning a borehole that was drilled by a religious organization Child Care Worldwide.
On the closure of the farm that at one time was the largest producer of roses, Mbugua termed the move as a very big blow to the country’s economy.
“The farm employed thousands of people directly and indirectly and its closure will definitely be felt across the whole country,” he said.
He said he had raised the issue with the national government, adding that plans were at an advanced stage to seek an investor to buy-out the farm.
On water, the governor admitted that Nakuru was one of the counties where water availability remained a major challenge.
He said his government was committed to addressing the issue adding that budget allocation towards drilling of more boreholes in the county would be increased.
“We have plans to source for fluoride-free water from Nyandarua for Naivasha residents where water is a major challenge,” he said.
