Nakuru Governor Kinuthia Mbugua has said that his government will not allow mushrooming of slums in Nakuru town by property developers who flout county planning and housing rules.
Mbugua said that rogue contractors, engineers, county planners and property investors were colluding in building what he termed as substandard buildings which he said are likely to turn Nakuru into a slum town.
Speaking on Thursday at Machanga Estate when he laid a foundation for construction of county government houses, Mbugua said that his government is committed to transforming Nakuru into a town with the best housing plans and structures.
“There are so many rouge contractors and engineers out there whose sole aim is to make money and they are partaking in building of some very shoddy structures in some of our estates, but I want to tell them that I will not watch as they turn Nakuru into a slum town,” warned Governor Mbugua.
He added, “Developers are to either follow our housing rules and plans or go and do their shoddy jobs elsewhere.”
County Lands, Housing and Planning Executive Rachael Maina on her part said that the process of identifying illegal and sub-standard structures in Nakuru town will continue and warned that a lot of house demolitions might be on the way.
“We are still in the process of mapping out all buildings which should not be left standing and as soon as we finish the process I can tell you people will see bulldozers at work,” said CeC Maina.
