Governor Kinuthia Mbugua has threatened to institute legal action against a local daily over what he said it published a story linking him to the outlawed Mungiki sect.

The paper is said to have carried the story just a day after the governor attended the burial of Nakuru businessman Joseph Chege on Tuesday, who was brutally murdered together with his colleague, days after they were abducted.

There have been claims in Nakuru town that the murdered businessmen were Mungiki members, and that is why security was heightened during Chege's burial at Engashura Heshima, Kiamaina ward.

But while speaking to this writer in his office, the governor said: “I am consulting with my lawyers. Mungiki is an outlawed sect. I was shocked to find the two were members of the sect. I attended the funeral and called upon the police to act quickly and arrest the culprits”.

"I did not have information that the two were members of Mungiki, and it was wrong for this newspaper (The Standard) to cover one story after I attended two burial functions, this can only mean that they have more information concerning those allegations,” he said.
