Two leaders from Athi River have differed over a recent protest by residents.
Deputy County Commissioner Kodeck Makori and Katani Muthwani MCA Domnic Maitha disagreed on whether the residents were right to hold the demonstration.
Whereas the DCC was against the demonstration, the MCA said locals had the right to demonstrate to air their grievances.
“People should forward their grievances to relevant authorities whenever they feel aggrieved, no blocking Mombasa Road,” said Makori.
Makori was reacting to Maitha’s call to Athi River residents to continue being vigilant whenever they had issues with the region’s leadership either from the national or Machakos County government.
The two expressed the different views while addressing members of the public at a function in Athi River town on Saturday.
Maitha alleged that there was too much corruption in Governor Alfred Mutua’s government which hampers service delivery hence called on Athi River residents to block the road so as to paralyze transport.
The MCA faulted the county government for being slow in rehabilitating roads in the ward.
Makori said Mombasa road was a busy highway whose operations cannot be disrupted by locals.
“Commuters on the road have got nothing to do with the public problems, if people incite others to engage in illegal activities then the law will take its course,” he said.
He said public incitement is a serious offense and therefore has to be shunned at all costs for peaceful coexistence and security enhancement in the region.
