[Photo: Daily Monitor]When a Ugandan court clerk was suspended from work two weeks ago for what was termed as 'indecent dressing', locally it revived the 'demons' of 'my dress, my choice' campaign that affirmed Kenyan women's freedom of dressing. However, this campaign may once again be about to start dominating our dressing debate if a suggestion by a Nyeri County MCA is something to go by.Karatina Ward MCA Watson Mburungo has pleaded with his female colleagues to stop wearing miniskirts, which he claims distract and carry him away during house sittings.Mburungo on Wednesday told Nyeri County Assembly Speaker John Kaguchia that he and his male colleagues could hardly concentrate in the House because of the skimpy dressing by their female colleagues, the Nation reports.“Some of us cannot concentrate as we sit across our female MCAs. Kindly, advise us on the mode of dressing. It is difficult for some of us to concentrate when our counterparts are in miniskirts,” Mburungo said as quoted by the Nation. The Speaker, however, declined to give directions noting that the MCA was out of order and the matter could not be addressed.“We are debating on the governor’s speech to the assembly, you cannot introduce something different,” he said. The MCAs, the Nation says, were contributing to a debate on Governor Wahome Gakuru’s speech when Mburungo digressed to address the mode of dressing that female MCAs should adhere to.The MCAs burst into laughter as Mburungo attacked a female MCA, whom he felt had dressed skimpily.Kenya does not have a dress code for public servants and women are free to wear what they please.
