Naivasha MCA Simon Wanango has blamed the collapsing of buildings to laxity of the government engineers in carrying out their inspectorate duties. Wanango noted that many of the engineers were desktop engineers and did not go to the actual sites to inspect the buildings under construction. According to Wanango, most signed the certificate from their offices which should not be the case. “They are supposed to monitor every stage of the building construction. However many of them do not actually go to the sites but sign the papers from behind their desks,” he said. Wanango, who also chairs the Implementation Committee of the Nakuru County Assembly observed that they would start a building inspection in the county seeking to have the owners produce a certificate of completion. “This is the only way we can be assured that the buildings are safe for people to live in. In any case if the building collapses yet the owner has the certificate, we can sue the sub-county administrators,” he added. Wanango cited that they were targeting areas like Njoro, Molo, Naivasha and Nakuru town where there are new upcoming towers. “We do not want to put our residents at risk especially considering that the area is known to cave in on several occasions due to the type of soils found here,” he added.
