Kamau said many of the projects had led to clogged drainage in Nakuru West, forcing the water to be stagnant hence leading to frequent outbreak of waterborne diseases.

“In most of the areas they did a shoddy job. They even left soil in the drainage and sewers. Our sewers are totally blocked,” he added.

Kamau said the roads which were constructed under the World Bank project, had the existing culverts removed while their adjacent trenches covered in soil.

“For more than five months they have blocked some of the roads and yet they removed the ones which we had started constructing. ‘he added.

Nakuru West, which has experienced floods since Tuesday, has become impassible to the residents.

Several families have been displaced by the water believed to have been brought about by blocked water ways in London area.

Speaking to the press on Thursday while on tour of the area, Kamau challenged the bank to prioritise drainage when it comes to slum upgrading programmes, saying many people are feeling the pain of the flood waters in their areas.

NAWASCO managing director James Nganga attributed the burst sewers to rain water being tapped on the roofs.

“Most people have directed their rain water to our sewers which fills them as the system is not meant to handle a lot of water. It hence becomes a big challenge to separate sewer water and rain water often leading to the burst pipes,” he said.
