An all inclusive parliamentary committee that has been tasked with responsibility of coming up with reforms that the electoral body IEBC should undergo has been requested to consider inclusion of people with disability in the new electoral body after disbandment of the current one.

The request came from an MCA representing interests of persons with disability in the Siaya county assembly Ms Margaret Adhiambo Oketch.

She appealed to the committee, led by Hon James Orengo and his counterpart Hon Kiraitu Murungi to ensure that a representative of people with disability be given a chance to be one of the commissioners of the new electoral body.

"I wish to say this: it's my desire that a person with disability be amongst these commissioners," pleaded Oketch.

According to the MCA, the IEBC team that has accepted to leave office and go home, had no single person with disability to represent interests of the disabled and that affected the poll petitions forwarded to the commissioners by the disabled contestants.

"You will find that many election cases by the disabled posed challenge to the electoral commissioners. So it's my appeal that a slot be created for a person with disability when these commissioners will be appointed," added the nominated MCA.

Ms Oketch made these remarks while in Bondo in Siaya county on Thursday, where she encouraged the disabled to rise up and vie for various posts in the coming general elections so as to avoid waiting for nominations alone.
