Hospital Ward MCA Mwangi Wamwangi has called for the modernisation of rental houses in various estates in Thika Town.
Speaking at his Thika office on Monday, Wamwangi said that many estates in Thika Town were still dominated by old structures that takes a lot of space.
He noted that Thika's population was increasing fast which calls for modern structures that can house many people on a limited space.
"If you go to many estates like Majengo, Biafra, Pilot, Makongeni and many others, you will find that the houses that dominate the area were built in the 1970s and 80s,” said Wamwangi.
He added: "The houses were meant to house the then smaller town population. Things are now different as people have increased and we should have a different plan.”
The MCA said that Kiambu County government should emulate Nairobi in modernising the town.
"Our Physical and Planning Department should start issuing guidelines on how to go about these old buildings so that we change with times. Nairobi County is already on it,” he said.
Wamwangi said that modernising the estates would provide ample and affordable housing.
