A motion seeking to license the sale of shisha in specific areas of Mombasa County has already started to elicit mixed reactions from different factions. Nominated MCA Fatma Swaleh, who is drafting the Bill has differed with Kenya Muslim National Advisory Council chair Sheikh Juma Ngao over the motion. If the motion sails through, there will be a ban on miraa and muguka but the sale of shisha will be allowed at specific points in the county. On Wednesday, Swaleh had recommended that miraa and muguka should also be banned if the shisha ban is effected, arguing that they have the same effect on the body.“If they are banning shisha, they should also ban miraa and muguka because they all have the same effect,” said Swaleh during an interview with The Star. The MCA also said that she supports the ban but asked the government not to be selective in making such decisions.Ngao, has, however, said that the motion to legalise shisha in some areas is not only ill-intended but also politically instigated.“Allowing shisha to be sold in specific areas is like saying our youth should only be killed in specific areas because shisha kills,” said Sheikh Ngao. The cleric also said that lifting the ban in some areas will lead to increased cases of cancer, HIV/Aids and hepatitis B and C among youths. Is there a newsworthy accident, incident or event happening in Mombasa County that you want Hivisasa to cover?
