Landlords in Banana town and its environs have been urged to screen their tenants before allowing them to occupy their rental houses.

According to the Muchatha ward Member of the County Assembly (MCA) Peter Kiarie Waruinge, the time had come when landlords should be compelled to demand certificates of good conduct from their tenants before leasing out their premises.

The MCA lamented over the rising cases of insecurity in the town and its environs and called for the efforts of the landlords and security agencies to beef up security in the area.

Kiarie was addressing mourners at Karura village in the outskirts of Banana town on Thursday during the burial ceremony of the late William Miano who was last week gunned down by armed thugs after a robbery incident at a nearby shopping centre.

This comes in the wake of a series of cases of armed robberies in the recent past where several people had lost their lives after being robbed while others were  left with serious injuries.

Kiarie wondered how armed thugs were raiding housing estates in the area without being apprehended by police.

The MCA pointed out that the recent wave of crime in the area and its environs could have been contained if chiefs acted and ensured that landlords had records of all their tenants adding that it is the same tenants who raid their neighbours.

The late Miano who is survived by his wife, and a child was responding to a distress call from his neighbour who had been attacked by armed thugs and robbed when he met his sudden death.
